“CSP broadened my knowledge and sharpened my systems thinking skills
to a whole new level in the most fun and supportive way anyone could ever
experience. The global network it opens and (mentoring for) how to use
it strategically… is what makes the program different.”

-S.I. Galuh Sekar Arum, Class of 2021

“CSP is more than a graduate program, it is a network for
inspiration, mentorship and empowerment to equip students
with the right skills, and attitudes and connect them to resources
to address pressing environmental issues around the globe. CSP
positions the most motivated and action-oriented students in a
unique position to bridge policy and practice which translate into
improving livelihoods and environmental sustainability.

-Abel Mkulama, Class of 2021

“Participating in the CSP program has been one of the most
impactful experiences of my life thanks to the unique program
structure. My classmates aren’t just students- they’re seasoned
practitioners from diverse systems and places with extensive
expertise. In a short period of time, I’ve learned so much from
them, made lifelong connections, and found a new family.”

-Olivia Won, Class of 2023

Financial Support: Based on financial need and program resources, CSP offers a limited number of fellowships for incoming Masters of Science students (packages may cover a portion or a combination of tuition, fees, or living stipend). Additional theme-based fellowships are listed below.

Theme-based Fellowships Offered for Fall 2024 Incoming Students:

Two one-year Coastal Climate Resilience fellowships that provide support towards tuition, fees, stipend (academic year and summer between the first and second year), and professional development. Fellowships will support students addressing practical solutions for coastal climate resilience and may weave topics of environmental justice, climate risk, mitigation and adaptation including nature-based solutions, biodiversity conservation, food systems resilience, and more. These fellowships are supported by the Coastal Climate Resilience Center at UC Santa Cruz.

Two one-year Schmidt Marine Innovation Fellowships for incoming Coastal Science and Policy MS students. Each fellowship will provide support towards tuition, fees, and stipend. These fellowships are provided by generous support of Schmidt Marine Technology Partners, a program of the Schmidt Family Foundation.

One Two-Year Repass-Rodgers Fellowship on Central Valley Salmon Restoration Policies. The Coastal Science and Policy (CSP) graduate program at UC Santa Cruz seeks applications for one Repass-Rodgers Fellowship on Central Valley Salmon Restoration Policies. The fellowship will support one student for two years to work on advancing policy change to restore salmon populations in the California Central Valley and Sacramento Delta. Our ideal Repass-Rodgers Fellow shows leadership promise, eagerness to focus their capstone project on applying science towards policy change, interest in building public support for salmon restoration, strong capacity to collaborate with diverse partners, and is an effective communicator. This highly competitive fellowship covers two academic years of in-state tuition, student fees (including health insurance), a living stipend (including academic year and modest summer support) and some travel and supplies.

Who Should Apply

The Graduate Program in Coastal Science and Policy is a unique interdisciplinary program educating students to pursue coastal sustainability solutions from land to sea. The program emphasizes collaborations with practitioners, in real-world settings, working to solve some of today’s most wicked social-environmental problems. The program prepares diverse rising leaders to identify, innovate and advance scalable and socially just solutions to coastal sustainability challenges.

Students can pursue a two-year Master of Science in Coastal Science and Policy or a PhD Designated Emphasis (akin to a minor for PhD students).

Most students will have some professional work experience in a relevant field and have completed a bachelor’s degree at a four-year university. Relevant fields are diverse and include biology, conservation science, earth sciences, chemistry, oceanography, environmental studies, social sciences, economics, human ecology, political science, sociology, engineering, and interdisciplinary programs.

Prerequisites: CSP welcomes applicants from many disciplines. Requirements prior to admission include at least one course in statistics, as well as coursework in at least two of the following three areas: biological sciences, physical sciences, and the social sciences (including policy and economics).

Students from underrepresented and diverse racial, ethnic, cultural, socioeconomic, and disciplinary backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Based on financial need and program resources, CSP offers a limited number of fellowships for incoming Masters of Science students (packages may cover a portion or a combination of tuition, fees, or living stipend).

Tailored Approach to Learning

The CSP Program allows students to tailor their experience to meet their learning objectives and career goals. Although each student must take the required courses (including a methods course and an elective) and complete a practical capstone project (or capstone and summer placement), there is significant tailoring and flexibility for each student.

Examples of student capstones by theme are linked below:
