The Coastal Science and Policy Program (CSP) warmly welcomes Dr. Borja Gonzalez Reguero as core faculty for the program. Dr. Reguero is well acquainted with CSP—he’s been supporting students in the role of adjunct faculty since the first cohort in 2019.
“I’m thrilled to welcome Borja into the CSP core faculty,” said Dr. Anne Kapuscinski, Director of CSP. “His interdisciplinary expertise, solutions orientation in his research, and proven commitment to mentoring CSP students makes him an ideal and welcomed addition.”
Dr. Reguero works at the intersection of coastal engineering, risk management, and policy to advance sustainable solutions in coastal areas. His research and teaching interests span areas of climate change and adaptation. At UC Santa Cruz and CSP, he studies how climate change affects coastal hazards and advances the use of natural infrastructure and nature-based solutions for climate resilience, as multifaceted strategies to reduce risk from sea level rise and extreme weather events. In close partnership with the public and private sector, his work has informed new policy proposals to protect coastlines and coastal infrastructure in the U.S. and internationally, value U.S. coral reefs as natural infrastructure, and developed innovative resilience insurance concepts that align climate risk and environmental goals (e.g. reef insurance in Mexico and Hawaii). Dr. Reguero holds a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering and Environmental Hydraulics, a M.S. in Coastal and Port Engineering, and a M.S. in Applied Economics.
“I believe there is a lot of potential for innovation at the intersection of engineering with environmental, geophysics and coastal science,” says Dr. Reguero. “I look forward to joining the unique interdisciplinary and entrepreneurship environment of CSP. I look forward to driving innovation in coastal resilience by working with students, faculty, and researchers to address coastal climate change, resilience, and sustainability challenges, in California and internationally.”
