Group course workshop spring 2025

A workshop on May 15-17, 2025 was the culmination of the 2nd running of the professional development course in Coastal Climate Resilience, facilitated by CSP’s Director of Programs and Workforce Development, Sarah Eminhizer. Supported by Holly Rindge, the course consisted of eight weeks on online learning and an in-person workshop held on UCSC’s coastal science campus. The spring course drew 25 participants from across California, plus other west and east coast locations.

During the workshop, participants formed teams and worked through aspects of real coastal climate resilience projects that they were tackling in their everyday work, benefiting from team members’ brain banks and experts from CSP, UCSC’s Center for Coastal Climate Resilience, Pathways Climate Consulting, FEMA, Ninth Root, the City of Santa Cruz, San Mateo County, and Virtual Planet Technologies.

The final day saw teams present progress on their projects, reflections on immediate next steps for their own work with accountability partners, and lunch with new colleagues and friends.

Testimonials

“This course has impressed upon me the importance of building and strengthening relationships and partnerships across sectors and geographies. I’ve spent so much time trying to dig into the technical elements of my work, but this course also gave me the opportunity discuss the importance of meaningful community engagement (and the equally meaningful work of networking with peers).”

“I come from a marine biology background, so coastal resilience felt a little outside my wheelhouse at first. But this course made it all click. Whether you’re totally new to this work or deep in it, and whether you’re focused on a small neighborhood or a whole coastline, the tools and conversations in this course are so relevant and grounding. I left feeling way more confident talking with consultants and so much more prepared to bring my community into the work. It honestly shifted how I see my role in coastal conservation and resiliency.”

“This is a must take course for any professional engaging with and looking for myriad nature-based approaches to Coast Climate Adaptation and Resiliency and wanting to dive a little deeper. The arc of the course makes sense and is clearly organized, and culminates is an incredibly impactful 3 day in person workshop with an impressive group of colleagues.”

“I highly recommend this course to any and all professionals that aim to enhance their understanding of climate change and adaptation. This course reviews real world problems, projects, and solutions that are impacting communities across our state. The course presents great introductory materials and also provides more detailed reading for those whole would like to take a deeper dive!”
