Capstone Project: Promoting Sustainable Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Trade to Ensure Local Fish Supply and Access to Export Markets in Africa
This capstone project focuses on supporting sustainable fisheries, aquaculture, and fisheries exports in Africa in a way that ensures a steady supply of fish and nutrients to meet growing demand while providing access to international business. It will explore how the growth of both aquaculture and fisheries impacts fish trade, food availability, and nutritional security across the continent. The project will be directly used in the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s analyses to promote sustainable seafood sourcing in a way that balances local markets and consumption against fish exports to avoid disrupting local nutrition. By collaborating with global experts and African stakeholders, the project aims to provide insights on which fish species should be exported and which should remain in Africa. Additionally, it could offer guidance to countries looking to develop aquaculture industries to reduce imports and meet local demand.
